Nachverdichtung
Church bells mark time. Each bell has a specific strike tone—determined by its shape, size, and material—and a unique vibration cycle. These bells were the starting point for the composition Nachverdichtung (english: densification), written for three organs. The piece gradually expands from isolated percussive points into a dense polyphonic texture.
Each of the three organists performs in an individual tempo, drawing on the distinct tonalities of the bells from three different Düsseldorf churches: St. Peter, St. Antonius, and St. Albertus Magnus. The result is a trans-spatial sound structure that asks: How does time pass? Is it composed of singular moments or continuous processes? Nachverdichtung invites listeners to pause, to linger, and to attune themselves to overlapping temporalities.
The work was created as part of the IDO – International Düsseldorf Organ Festival, which featured site-specific and experimental works for pipe organ. Three newly composed pieces were performed in parallel across three churches, connected via live audio streams.
