MEMO

How can memory be composed and visualized? MEMO is a media art project takign place in so-called highway churches. This typology is defined by churches and chapels located maximum 1km distance to a highway. The project has been established by musicians Lukas Schäfer and Luis Weiß (alias Betonklang) in collaboration with artist and architect Nathalie Brum. From June 28 to July 08, 2024, the highway and cycling church St. Paul Wittlich becomes a creative site of remembrance.
A modified telephone - the MEMOphone - was programmed especially for this project and has been installed in the church ahead of the exhibition, inviting visitors and residents of the nearby senior home to record memories and reflections. These audio messages form the core of a sound and video installation. Traces, memories, fragments of the past—intimate material from the local community—flow directly into the artistic process.
